Muskego had the musical Les Miserables February 17th-19th, and it turned out amazing, even though a couple of things had to change due to COVID, but the class that had the most students in the musical were the Juniors.

This year with COVID there was a lot different with the musical because of every precaution that had to be taken.  Emma Johnson a junior who played Gavroche, a 12 year old boy who lives on the streets of Paris said, “Masks were worn throughout the entire duration of the show, and for some people it was difficult for them to handle their breathing while singing”. The show also had no dancing like previous years, there was no dancing because of close contact, “If dancing was involved in the musical, there would be a lot of close contact with each other and heavy breathing, also singing during the dance would potentially spread COVID” Emma said.

Due to COVID the musical had to change how people would see the show, they couldn’t come into the PAC and watch it like previous years, “When the musical started rehearsals, the directors announced that the musical would be recorded like a movie, and no audience member were allowed. As we neared the filming days, the directors allowed all the seniors to invite a maximum of two audience members to watch the filming of the musical. There were still seats open after the seniors got to pick their two audien

ce members, so the leads and understudies were allowed to bring two guests as well” Johnson said.

Rehearsals for the show had to be split up because of COVID too, they could not all rehearse all at once like they used to do.  Emma says “The rehearsals had to be split up into different sections. There was three choruses which were red, white and blue. For about a month or two, the rehearsals were divided into the three choruses and leads/supportings either had their own rehearsal or joined in with one of the choruses”. When the show got closer the groups got together and would start working together as a full cast and would get used to the songs together. The time of the rehearsals did not change, they were just as long as previous years.

The students did an amazing job, and so did the staff and everyone who made the musical possible this year!
