A Glimpse of the 2018 Soccer Season

As spring rolls around, the girls soccer team is kicking into the new season. The team lost ten seniors from the previous year, but eight of those places have been filled by freshmen Jackie Stadler, Summer Malinauskas, Gabby Garcia, Emma Pankiewicz, Jordyn Czarapata, Jovanka Novakovich, Sara Jochims, and Olivia Schneider. All the new freshmen make a majority of the team relatively young, but that has not been a problem for the team. Senior Kate Brandstatter shared, “These younger girls we brought up have made great gains early in the season and we are all still continuing to grow as a unit and develop better team chemistry.” So far, the girls have won five games against New Berlin West (7-0), Brookfield Academy (5-0), Waukesha North (5-0), Mukwonago (1-0), and Cedarburg (2-1). They also have tied two games against Waukesha West (2-2) and Kenosha Tremper (0-0), and have only suffered one loss against Catholic Memorial (0-2).

As we all know, the weather in the beginning of this season hasn’t been the greatest, but the bad weather has only cancelled one game. The game, which was supposed to be against Arrowhead, has been rescheduled for later in the season. Coach Matthews shared in an interview with the Waukesha Freeman that the girls are really looking forward to playing Arrowhead and seeing where they stand in skills as a team. Although that game was cancelled, some of the other games had to be played in pretty harsh conditions, but that didn’t stop the girls from playing their hardest. At the Brookfield Academy game, junior Mackenzie Balcerak managed to score a hat trick, despite the strong winds, rain, and low wind chill. Overall, the team is doing very well this season and hopes to achieve their goals of defending their Classic 8 conference championship from last year and make another trip to State, which they have accomplished the past four years. So far, it looks like they’re on the right track to achieving these goals. Good luck girls!
